Charleston Celebrity Sightings

Bill Murray – Actor

A well-known name on the big screen, Bill Murray is one of the more active members of the Charleston community. When he’s not on the set of a movie, Murray can be found just about anywhere in the city. His most frequent sightings are at the Joe Riley stadium watching RiverDogs games (Charleston’s minor league baseball team.) He is also a part-owner of the popular Wagener Terrace restaurant, Rutledge Cab Company, and will soon be opening a new restaurant called, Harold’s Cabin. He has also been known to crash a local engagement photo session or two (okay, just one).

Darius Rucker – Musician

Once the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish, this native Charlestonian can frequently be seen brunching with the rest of us on Sunday mornings with his family. Rucker founded the band in 1986 while attending the University of South Carolina along with band mates, Mark Bryan, Jim Sonefeld and Dean Felber. In 2008, Rucker switched gears a bit when he signed to Capitol Records Nashville as a country artist.

Stephen Colbert – Comedian

While he was born in Washington DC, Colbert spent the majority of his young life in the Charleston area. He attended Charleston’s Porter-Gaud School where he participated in several school plays and was a contributor to the school’s newspaper. He doesn’t permanently live in the area but has been spotted while at home visiting family.

Elise Testone – Singer

Best known for her 6th place award on the eleventh season of American Idol, Testone moved to Charleston in 2006 where she began collaborating with local musicians in the area. In 2011, Testone’s band, “The Freeloaders,” won the Funk/Soul/R&B artist of the year award in the Charleston City Paper.

Shepard Fairey – Artist

Most famous for the iconic “HOPE” portrait of Barack Obama, Fairey was born and raised in Charleston. His street art and graphic design has been exhibited in contemporary museums all over the country. He is one of the most influential street artists in the world. He recently revealed a series of large-scale street murals all around Charleston.
